BROOKLYN BOTANICAL GARDENS
Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a 90-minute seasonal highlight tour. The 52-acre garden includes a number of specialty gardens, plant collections and the Steinhardt Conservatory which houses the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, three climate-themed plant pavilions, a white cast-iron and glass aquatic plant house and an art gallery. Some of the specialty gardens and collections include Cherry Esplanade; the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden, a blend of the ancient hill and pond style with hills, a waterfall, a pond and an island; The Cranford Rose Garden, with over 5,000 bushes of over 1,400 kinds of roses including garden roses, hybrid tea roses, grandifloras, floribundas, climbers, ramblers and miniature roses; The Shakespeare Garden, an English cottage garden that exhibits more than 80 plants mentioned in William Shakespeare’s plays and poems; The Alice Recknagel Ireys Fragrance Garden, complete with Braille information signs for visitors with vision disabilities. The four sections of this garden are each themed – plants to touch, plants with scented leaves, plants with fragrant flowers and kitchen herbs. Other gardens include the Discovery Garden, the Herb Garden, the Lily Pool Terrace, the Osborne Garden, and the Rock Garden. A celebrity Path includes famous Brooklynites such as Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen and Walt Whitman with a trail of engraved paving stones. The Steinhardt Conservatory houses an extensive indoor plant collection in three climate-controlled pavilions for tropical, warm temperate and desert floras. Also located here are: the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, one of the oldest collections of dwarfed, potted trees in the country; an art gallery for changing art exhibitions; the Robert W. Wilson Aquatic House, with its collections of tropical water plants, insect-eating plants, and orchids; and the Stephen K-M Tim Trail of Evolution, which traces the history of plant evolution and the effects of climate change over 3½ billion years. USS INTREPID – FLEET WEEK
Travel to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum for a unique journey through spectacular interactive exhibits and virtual, multi-sensory technology. Located at Pier 86, the complex boasts 30 restored aircrafts, the former USS Growler submarine and the British Airways Concorde. The museum is one of America’s leading historic, cultural and educational institutions and was one of the most successful ships in US history. She served proudly in World War II and went on to serve as one of the primary recovery vessels for NASA, three tours of duty off Vietnam and submarine surveillance in the North Atlantic during the Cold War. 9/11 MEMORIAL
The 9/11 Memorial consists of two massive pools set within the original footprints of the Twin Towers with 30-foot waterfalls cascading down their sides. The names of the 3,000 men, women and children who were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks are inscribed in bronze panels surrounding the edges of the waterfalls. This Memorial occupies 8 of the 16 acres that make up the World Trade Center site. Witness the World Trade Center rebuilding taking place including the construction of One World Trade Center. When you leave the Memorial, visit historic St. Paul’s Chapel, built in 1766. The church, across the street from the World Trade Center, did not sustain any damage when the towers fell. After the tour, you will have free time on your own for lunch and exploring. Note: All visitors will pass through magnetometers, hand-wanding or pat-down inspections and any bags are subject to security screening. Please limit the amount of items that you bring with you. HOWE CAVERNS
Travel to Howe’s Cave, New York for an 80-minute walking tour with a boat ride at Howe Caverns. Your journey begins with a pre-tour show starring Lester Howe. Then, descend by elevator 156 feet below the Earth’s surface into a world that took Mother Nature millions of years to create. Travel to Rhinebeck, New York, a beautiful historic area in Northern Dutchess County. After lunch, it’s off to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, a living museum of antique aviation (World War I aircraft and antique automobiles). Bannerman Castle is the remnant of a Scotsman’s fortress, built not as a home, but as an arsenal for his immense collection of weapons.
